My phone is full: the safe order
When the phone says storage is full, the fastest fixes can leave your full-size photos in only one place. This page gives the order that keeps two copies the whole way through, with each step linked to the chapter that explains it.
Why the order matters
The two settings that free the most space on a phone both work by moving the full-size photos off it. iPhone's Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller, space-saving versions on the phone and the full-size originals in iCloud (Apple, iCloud Photos). Google Photos' Free up space deletes the phone's copies of photos that are backed up, leaving the cloud copy at whatever quality it was backed up in (Google, Free up space). Either way, after you use it, the full-size photo is in one place: the cloud. A cloud library that syncs is one copy, not a backup, because a photo deleted on one device is deleted on every device (Sync is not a backup). So the safe order makes a second copy first. Product-specific
The safe order
- Check what is backed up, and at what quality. On an iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos: see whether this iPhone syncs, and under iPhone Storage whether it is set to Optimize iPhone Storage (in iOS 26 or earlier, the choice is simply Optimize Storage). In Google Photos, tap your profile picture > Photos settings > Backup: see whether backup is on and the Photos & videos quality. A photo showing in the app does not mean it is backed up; open one and look at More > Details for "Backed up". Google's Storage saver resizes photos over 16 MP and may convert them to JPEG, so it is not a full-size copy. (What the space-saving settings do)
- Make a second copy of the originals, and open a photo from it. With no computer, plug a USB-C drive into the iPhone and, in Photos, select photos > Share > Export Unmodified Originals, choosing the drive under Locations; a big library goes in batches. With a computer, import by cable or use the computer's backup. Then open a few photos and one video from the drive on another device. (A backup with no computer, Getting photos out)
- Now choose the space-saving setting, knowing what it removes. Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller versions on the phone and starts with the items you look at least. Free up space deletes the phone's copies; items under 30 days old may stay. Write which one you turned on, and when, on your library plan. (One home for your photos)
- Delete the obvious misses. Blurred and accidental shots, screenshots you no longer need, exact duplicates. Deleted items stay in Recently Deleted (Apple) or Trash (Google) for 30 days before they are gone; over the iCloud storage limit, Apple says deleted photos are removed at once. (What to delete without much thought)
- Write it down. On the backup sheet, the drive copy with today's date and the date you opened a photo from it. The phone will fill again; the routine in Routines and handing on keeps the drive current.
Done when: the photos are in two places, a photo has been opened from the second one, and the phone has space.
Do not delete photos from the phone, or turn on Free up space, until you have opened them from another copy. Do not turn on Free up space while Google Photos backs up in Storage saver unless you accept that the resized copies will be the only ones. This manual's rule

Nadia Brooks (fictional; she/her) has a 128 GB iPhone that says storage is almost full. Known: iCloud Photos is on, with a 50 GB iCloud+ plan holding 46 GB, and Optimize iPhone Storage is off, so the phone holds every full-size original; about 7,800 photos and 260 videos since 2019. She checks Settings > [her name] > iCloud > Photos and sees the phone syncs and keeps originals. She makes the second copy: a 1 TB USB-C drive, Export Unmodified Originals, one year at a time over three evenings, then opens five photos and a video from the drive. Only then does she turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. Open: iCloud is 4 GB from its limit; if it fills, iCloud stops updating and deleted photos skip Recently Deleted. Nadia settles that by deleting obvious misses after the drive copy exists, or by a larger plan; she writes the choice on her plan. Assumed: that the export brought everything; she compares the drive's count with the phone's before she relies on it.
Other places a full phone hides photos
- Messages. On an iPhone, Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages: anything other than Forever removes old conversations and their attachments automatically (Apple). Save the photos you want from a conversation to the library before you change it.
- WhatsApp. A photo in a chat goes blurry once the phone's own copy is deleted (WhatsApp's help page "Seeing blurry photos"). Save the ones that matter before you clear WhatsApp's storage.
- Video. Videos take far more space than photos. They travel with the photos in this manual: copied, backed up and shared under the same rules.
This page gives an order, not a guarantee that every photo was copied: the count check in Getting photos out is what tells you the copy is complete. Settings are named from Apple's and Google's pages as of 2026-10-30; if your phone's screens differ, follow the phone. Buying more cloud storage is the other way out of a full iCloud or Google account; this manual does not recommend a plan.
